Planning a Meaningful Funeral
Begin with the person, not the programme. Before you book a venue or choose a casket, write down five things that were unmistakably them — a hymn, a colour, a proverb, a dish, a habit. Every decision that follows should point back to that list.
Decide early who speaks. Two or three well-prepared tributes carry far more weight than nine improvised ones. Give each speaker a firm time limit and a clear brief: one story, told well.
Choose a rhythm for the day. A service that moves — scripture, music, tribute, music, committal — holds a congregation. Long silences between segments drain the room; our coordinators build a minute-by-minute run sheet to prevent this.
Finally, plan the aftermath. The days after the burial are often the loneliest. Nominate someone to handle callers, and give the immediate family a protected day of rest.
