Funeral Etiquette Guide

Arrive at least fifteen minutes early and be seated before the cortege enters. Late arrivals should wait for a hymn or transition before taking a seat at the rear.

Dress conservatively. Unless the family has requested a specific colour or aso-ebi, choose black, charcoal, navy or white, with modest cuts.

Keep condolences brief and sincere at the service itself. Longer conversations belong at the reception or in the days that follow.

Photography should be discreet and never at the casket during a viewing unless the family has invited it.

Where a donation or gift is appropriate, present it privately through a nominated family representative rather than at the graveside.
